They have a super strong injection moulded fibre glass spool with a switch to engage multi-plate clutch with a metal star nut finishes the job. The multiple clutch is made up of polished brass plates and fibre friction washers which are oiled with Alvey Reel Oil to give a smooth strong clutch action. A fish alert switch on the back side of the reel can be engaged when leaving the rod and reel unattended to warn you of a fish taking line.
